Obituary

Virgil O. Hammersley, 80, of Genoa Illinois passed away Sunday, October 17, 2021.

Virgil was born December 18, 1940 to George and Mary (Basham) Hammersley in Raleigh, Illinois.

Virgil married Sue A. Pinne on May 21, 1966. Together they had two daughters.

He served in the United States Army in the 101 st Airborne stationed in Korea. He was a member of Carpenters Local Union Number 363. Prior to retirement, he worked in construction as Owner/Operator of Hammersley Roofing in Genoa.

He loved being outdoors hunting and fishing and traveling the U.S. with his wife visiting family and friends. He was a life-long St. Louis Cardinals fan.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Sue of Genoa, his children, Ollie Hammersley, Randall (Kristin) Hammersley, and James (John) Hammersley, Debi (Bill) Sell, Denniel Witkowski, Penny Hammersley and Angel Hayes, 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, two brothers, Louis Hammersley and Gene Hammersley and one sister, Louise Hammersley, numerous nieces and nephews.
His memorial visitation will be on Sunday, October 24th from 1:00-4:00 PM at the Slater-Butala Funeral Home, Genoa, IL.
A private service will be on Monday and burial will take place at the Highland Garden of Memories in Belvidere, IL.
