Susan Hughes

Susan Hughes, 82, of Sycamore, Illinois, passed away at her home on December 28, 2024.

She was born on November 11, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to Charles and Lucille (Bachman) Martin.

Susie married John Hughes on October 21, 2000, in Sycamore. John passed away shortly after his beloved wife on January 25, 2025.

Surviving are her children, Jeffrey (and Lynne) Johnson of Sycamore, Michael Johnson of Florida, Jennifer (and Terry) Towery of Peoria, and Christopher Johnson of Sycamore; one brother, Rich Martin of New Hampshire; grandchildren, Kimberly Jenkins, Zeb (and Tanya) Johnson, Alexandra (and Kevin) Farlinger, Isabella Johnson, Blaine Towery, Zachary Towery, Brennan Towery, Erika Anderson, Melanie Johnson and Brian Johnson; and her great-grandchildren, Silas, Sammy, Sariyah, Sage, Zoey, Arthur, Crash, Franklin and Zinnia.

Susie was a 1963 graduate of Lutheran General Hospital School of Nursing in Park Ridge, Illinois. She was a mother-baby nurse for many years and often joked that she had a baby at every hospital she worked at. She returned to nursing later in life and refreshed her skills at Kishwaukee Community College.

Susie and John traveled extensively together, enjoying several cross-country trips by train in the United States and Canada.

Susie loved reading, quilting, sewing, traveling and animals of all kinds. She raised many pets over the years and also rescued many orphaned or injured wild animals.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in DeKalb, DeKalb County Quilters Guild and 100+ Women Who Care. She volunteered teaching English as a Second Language for many years.

Cremation was accorded by Butala Funeral Home.

A memorial service to celebrate both Susie and John will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 22, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in DeKalb. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.

Memorials may be made to The Barn on Baseline animal shelter in Genoa or Oaken Acres Wildlife Center in Sycamore.
