Obituary

Shirley Hunt, age 69, of Cortland, IL passed away on July 8th, 2026.

Born on March 28th, 1957 in Chicago, IL Shirley was the third daughter of Vivian Shirley Davies, and Howard Hankins Kent. Throughout life, Shirley was known for her kind heart and love for her friends and family. While Shirley lived in Chicago for decades, she moved to Wisconsin in 1995 to provide a better life for her daughter. Shirley did not just give her daughter life; she gave up bits of her own so that her daughter could have a beautiful one. She was a woman of quiet strength, who spent her life putting the needs of her family above her own.

Shirley enjoyed reading, craft fairs, playing cards, and music. More than anything else in life Shirley loved taking care of and spending time with her grandson Drew.  Shirley loved being outdoors and her happy place was the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.  While she experienced many losses and health struggles throughout her life, she always felt so grateful, thankful, and blessed.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Shirley Rouse; son in-law, Philip Rouse; grandson Drew (who was her pride and joy); sister Sharon Rylands; brother in-law Keith Rylands; nieces: Kristin Brockman and Chantel Rylands; nephews: Joel Flores and Jason Sheperis; and her dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Kent; mother, Vivian Shirley Kent; and sisters, Marion Flores and Gail Sheperis.

A memorial will be held on Saturday, July 18th, 2026 at 2:00 p.m- 4:00 pm at Butala Funeral Home, 1405 DeKalb Ave,  in Sycamore, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Voluntary Action Center of Northern Illinois.

Shirley's life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She will always be loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. While we will miss her deeply, we take comfort knowing that she is finally at rest where the mountains meet the sky. Rest peacefully, Mom.
