Obituary

Richard "Dick" W. McCabe, 83, of DeKalb died April 28, 2024 at the Liberty Village of Rochelle.

He was born on December 21, 1940 in DeKalb to John and Helen (Johnson) McCabe.  He married the catch of his life Penelope (Penne) Reynolds on December 5, 1964.

Dick served his country and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Dick worked at Anaconda Wire and Cable Co. for 23 years and later worked at Kishwaukee Hospital in the maintenance department for over 24 years.

He went  to  St Mary's Grade school and DeKalb High School graduating in 1960. Playing baseball, basketball and football along the way. His biggest passion was the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing. Fishing was a lifelong love of his. Teaching others to fish including sharing the joy of fishing with Kelly, Will and Max.  In his later years he enjoyed watching game shows and comedy shows. He was also known to sing along to many a classic country song.

He was a proud participant of the local AA chapter for 46 years until his death. An accomplishment he was very proud of. Helping others on their road to recovery over those years.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years Penne of Dekalb; his daughter Kelly (Ken) Carlson of North Aurora;
grandsons William Manley and Maxwell Manley; sister Billie Jean Hartmann of Delavan, WI;
his best fishing buddies Dave Weaver, Bobby Wells and Roger Johnson.   He is further survived by other friends and neighbors who became family and many other relatives, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Helen McCabe; sister Marlene (Dave) Luciani and brother-in-law Don Hartmann.

The family would like to thank the incredible staff of Liberty Village of Rochelle for the compassionate care they gave Dick over this past year. They truly became family to the McCabe's.


His visitation will be on Friday, May 3rd from 3:00-6:00 PM at the Butala Funeral Home, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL with a wake service being recited at 6:00 PM.


A graveside service will be on Saturday, May 4th at 11:00 AM at the Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb with full military rites.


Memorials can be made in care of Penne McCabe to be used towards a memorial at Liberty Village of Rochelle.
