Michael Wayne Burmeister, 69, of Kingston, IL was unexpectedly taken from us on December 26
th
, 2022 at 12:01am. Although his death was sudden, we are finding great comfort in knowing that he did not suffer and was at home, right where he would have wanted to be.
Michael was born October 11, 1953 in Belle Plaine, IA to Patricia and Wayne Burmeister. He was a graduate of Lanark High School in 1971 where he participated in many sports.
He married Nancy Jo (Lancaster) Sanders on December 19, 1981. Nancy and Michael resided in Genoa, IL for 35 years until their retirement in 2017.
Michael was an avid sports fan. He spent several years coaching baseball and softball. He could be found pacing the sidelines at local football games, cheering from the bleachers at basketball games and keeping a scorebook at a baseball game. He was a proud IHSA certified umpire and continued to ump long after his coaching days ended. He was known for his post game narration on Facebook following each of the Cubs games.
Another great love of Michael's was music. He taught himself to play guitar after his retirement and could often be heard strumming a tune on his front porch on a sunny morning. He shared his love of music with his five children and twelve grandchildren, their favorite memory will be of him playing his guitar on Christmas Eve while everyone gathered in a circle to sing Christmas carols.
Michael was a proud union carpenter, employed by Local 790 for 45 years.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy and children: Colleen (Chris) Cooper, Kara (George) Grollemond, Layla (Nate) Atherton, Zachary (Elizabeth) Burmeister and Gabe (Megan West) Burmeister. His grandchildren were the light of his life: Abigail, Alivia, Aidan and Ava Cooper, Owen and Norah Grollemond, Dylan and Danika Atherton, Weston, Beauden, Elijah and Tucker Burmeister. He was overjoyed with the news that he will become a grandfather once again in April of next year and his siblings: Vicki Dambman, Scott (Debbie) Burmeister and Barry (Karyn) Burmeister.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Patricia and Wayne Burmeister, an infant daughter, Angie Burmeister and infant grandson, Lathan Atherton.
Visitation will be held Monday, January 2, 2023 from 12pm-4pm at the Slater-Butala Funeral Home in Genoa, IL., with a celebration of life service immediately following the visitation.
Memorials can be made to the family to determine the recipient at a later date in care of the Slater-Butala Funeral Home, 132 W. Main St., Genoa, IL. 60135.
