LeRoy "Mike" Eugene Shere
May 5, 1942 – September 1, 2025

LeRoy "Mike" Eugene Shere, 83, of Kirkland, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025. Born on May 5, 1942, in Moline, Illinois, Mike was the son of Herbert Charles and Helen (Kellner) Shere.

Mike was a proud Army veteran, drafted during the Vietnam War. Though prepared to serve in combat, his mechanical talents and athletic ability—particularly in softball—kept him in Thailand from 1964-1966 where he served honorably.

A man who loved the outdoors, Mike found great joy in farming, gardening, hunting, fishing, and watching or playing just about any sport. He was known for his strong spirit, his quick wit, and a generosity that knew no bounds. If someone needed help, Mike didn't hesitate—he showed up, ready to lend a hand. Above all, family was his highest priority. He led with strength and love, setting a powerful example for his children and grandchildren of what it means to be responsible, honorable, and present.

Mike is survived by his children: Karleen, Nicole (Mike Schultz) , Kimberly, Michael, Gregory (Melissa), and Brian (Sarah); his siblings: Lorraine Dorsey, Beverly Graf, Larry Shere, and Jerome Shere; grandchildren: Marquan Hammond, Carrie (Kelvin) Brown, Quinten Shere, Mackenzi Shere, Chloe Shere, Elyse Shere, Charlie Shere, Kayley Shere, Georgia Shere, Noah Shere, and Magnolia Shere; and a great-grandson expected in December, son of Carrie and Kelvin Brown.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Caroline; his parents; his siblings Lavon, Lavetta, Darlene, Donald, Merle, and Marlo; and his son-in-law, Steve Lindsey (Karleen).

A visitation will be held at 9am Saturday September 6th at St. Catherine of Genoa Church, 340 S. Stott St., Genoa, followed by a 10am funeral Mass and graveside ceremony. A luncheon will be served at the church following services. Arrangements are being handled by the Slater-Butala Funeral Home in Genoa.

Mike will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, and love for his family — values he passed down and that will live on for generations.
