Juan R.
Gonzalez
Mar 19, 1952 — Oct 11, 2026
Juan R. Gonzalez, 74, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on October 11, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born on March 19, 1952, in Humacao, Puerto Rico, to Adelaido Gonzalez and Catalina Diaz.Juan will be remembered for his goofy sense of humor, his genuine curiosity about others, and his ability to make people feel seen simply by asking thoughtful questions. He took joy in celebrating the successes of those around him and carried a deep love for his family, his country, and the United States Marine Corps. For 30 years, Juan worked as a janitor at the West Chicago Post Office, where he was known for his strong work ethic, meticulous attention to detail, and kind-hearted nature.
He approached his work with pride and consistency, earning the respect of coworkers and community members alike.Juan appreciated the simple pleasures in life. He enjoyed sleeping in his recliner, watching the History Channel, shopping at Walmart, listening to Motown, and, of course, working. Some people spend their lives searching for the extraordinary; Juan knew there was something to be said for a comfortable recliner, a good television program, and a trip to Walmart. He was also gifted at explaining things through analogies. Whatever the subject, Juan could usually find a comparison to make his point. You might not have asked for an analogy—and most did not—but chances were good you were going to get one anyway, and somehow, it would make sense.
Above all, Juan loved his family. He was the father of five children and the grandfather of eight grandchildren, and his family was among the greatest joys of his life. He took pride in their accomplishments, cared deeply about what was happening in their lives, and wanted to see them do well. Like any human being, Juan was not perfect. He could be stubborn, he could be quiet, and he had his own way of doing things. But love is not measured by perfection. It is measured by the life shared, the care given, the lessons passed down, and the memories that remain long after someone is gone. Juan’s love for his children and grandchildren was a lasting part of who he was, and his influence will continue through each of them.
Juan is survived by his former wife, Candy Scott; his children, Paul Martinez, Bridget Martinez, Yolanda Martinez, Christina Gonzalez, and Antony Gonzalez; his siblings, Jose and Angelo Gonzalez; and his grandchildren, Kane Martinez, Isabella Martinez, Naje Martinez, Sophia Martinez, Lili Vasquez, Andrew Martinez, Kaylanii Gonzalez and Kamilia Gonzalez.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adelaido Gonzalez and Catalina Diaz.A private celebration of life will be held with his immediate family.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his care providers at the VA—specifically Dr. Katz, Nurse Rosalyn, Gina Reist, Mercedes Yates‑Jones, Dr. Gindi, and Nurse Anthony; Unity Hospice, especially Nurse Valerie; and Visiting Angels, particularly Mercedes and Carmen.
Their compassion and dedication brought comfort and support during Juan’s final years.Juan will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
