John Shepherd, 59, of Loves Park died February 24, 2026, at Swedish American Hospital.

He was born a twin on September 22, 1966, in Des Moines, IA to William and Martine (French) Shepherd.  He was later fostered by Eileen Bosshart (and briefly, the late Fred Bosshart) for 33 years, followed by the last 7 years at Walter Lawson Children's Home in Loves Park.

John had special needs and was non-verbal, although he could clearly convey his joy for life and his big personality with his radiant, infectious smile. He loved music, animals and people, especially babies. His love was unconditional and he bestowed it on anyone who took a moment to speak to him. His love touched and changed people. We are all so grateful for the gift of John. In remembering John's life, please pass it on to all you know.

Survivors include his foster mother, mother; twin sister Vaughnceil Shepherd (Don); foster sisters Kathy Coffee, Jennifer Marshall, Wendy Kraemer, Allison (Sean) Brown; foster brothers Mark Bosshart, Fred Bosshart, Tim (Paula) Bosshart; many nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, friends, neighbors and caregivers.

John was preceded in death by his father, William Shepherd, foster father Frederick Bosshart and foster brothers, Daniel Bosshart and Martin Bosshart.

His visitation will be on Monday, March 2nd at 9:00-10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine of Genoa Church, 340 S. Stott St., Genoa, IL.  with a funeral mass beginning at 10:00 am.

A luncheon will be served in the basement of the church following the mass.

(Burial will be private at St. Michael the Archangel in Palatine).
