Gerald W. Gum's Obituary
Gerald W. Gum, 92, of Genoa died Monday, July 18, 2022 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on September 12, 1929 in Big Rock, IL to Wilbur and Ruth (Boyce) Gum. He was married to Delores "Tudy" (Halsey) Gum for 71 years. Gerald was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. When Gerald came home from Korea he began farming and driving trucks with his father, Wilbur and brother, Robert Gum. In 1963, he moved from Kaneville, IL to Genoa to farm full time. He wanted to be able to spend more time with his family. He farmed for at least 40 more years.
Gerald was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Genoa and the Genoa VFW, where he bartended for many years. He and his wife enjoyed going to Hill's Tap to socialize with their many friends. Gerald loved to keep busy- either fixing items around his home or collecting many unique things.
Survivors include his children, Lorene (Brad) McIntyre, Debra Gum, Vanessa (Jim) Fowler and Rich Gum; 12 grandchildren, Mackenzie (Dan) Young, Chelsea McIntyre (Rob Prehn), Somer (Mario) Serrano, Kristy (Phil) Meyer, Alexandra (Andy) Weiss, Jeffrey (Beth) Bridger, Sandra (Tom) Hobbs, Jacob (Emily) Fowler, Jeffery Fowler (Ashleigh Cummins), Anthony Gum, Amber (Bronson) Wiegartz and Ronald Sribniak; 15 great grandchildren; sister, Joanne Lancaster; sister-in-law, Rojean Gum; brother-in-law, Terry (Bev) Halsey; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his son, Jeff; granddaughter, Rebecca; brother, Robert Gum; sister, Judy (Terry) Minor; brothers-in-law, Bob (Carol) Halsey and Dwene Lancaster; and sister-in-law, Lee (Don) Carroll.
His visitation will be on Thursday, July 28th from 4:00-6:00 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 33930 N. State Road in Genoa. The memorial service will begin at
6:00 PM with Rev. William Gauger officiating. Military honors will follow the service.
A Celebration of Life to honor Gerald and Tudy will be on Saturday, July 30th at 2:00 PM at the Gum Farm Hunt Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to his family, for them to determine a charity at a later date. Arrangements were completed by the Slater-Butala Funeral Home, Genoa, IL.
