Edgar L Plapp, 94, lifelong Malta farmer, entered his eternal home on September 18, 2021, surrounded by family.

Born at Glidden Memorial Hospital on March 20, 1927, he was the oldest child of Martha M (Woltman) and William E Plapp. He attended Hueber country school through 8th grade, then graduated with the Malta township class of 1944. His love of music may have been born during a stint in a short-lived high school band as an enthusiastic cornet player. He was proud to have played taps at a Malta Decoration Day ceremony.

As a single young man, Edgar was perusing Chicago Daily Drivers Journal when a request for penpals by a young lady, Rosalie Nelson, caught his eye. His first postmarked reply was June 4, 1948. After a year of weekly correspondence, he borrowed his dad's car to travel to Nebraska for their first date on June 4, 1949. Edgar proposed on their third date, and on May 14, 1950, they were married in the living room of Rosalie's home in Ceresco, NE. He always spoke of her beautiful homegrown flowers, homemade satin dress, and how lucky he was to have Rosalie as "my bride." It was a term of endearment he used throughout his life. Returning from a honeymoon in the South Dakota Black Hills, they settled into their new little home on the family farm in Malta. He farmed with his father and brother until Elvin was chosen to join the Korean Conflict. Edgar and Rosalie raised 6 children together. The first 3 were born on their lucky day of June 4th, each 3 years apart!  They eventually outgrew their first home and moved next door to the home of his youth. Edgar was on the original DeKalb Area Pork Producers board, serving as their first vice president. He was well known throughout northern IL for his large farrow-to-finish hog enterprise, using cutting edge technology. He was a lifelong DeKalb County Farm Bureau member, serving on the board of directors.

Rosalie and Edgar were avid travelers, including their children on long summer road trips across the US, while sightseeing and visiting family and friends along the way. As a couple, they joined fellow farmers, traveling to 15 different countries including communist China, USSR, Europe, as well as Mexico and Alaska, absorbing the culture of each location. Edgar worked the Plapp farm until 1994 when they retired to a small farm in Evening Shade, Arkansas. They later moved to Cherokee Village, Arkansas where his energies went into collecting thousands of record albums, carefully cataloging each one, and listening to them while shelling pecans and walnuts. He returned to DeKalb county with his move to Oak Crest Retirement Center on his 90th birthday, several months after Rosalie's death.

Edgar is survived by sister, Shirley Hudson, 5 children, Avis J. (Sam) Williams of Cherokee Village, AR, Marla J. Smith of Hardy, AR, Aaron J. (Tamara) Plapp of Nora, IL, Muriel J. (Russell) Hinshaw of Topeka, KS, Adrian (Debra) Plapp of Malta, IL,  daughter-in-law, Kim Plapp of DeKalb, IL,  19 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Preceding Edgar in death are his parents, his lovely bride of 66 years, Rosalie, brother Elvin, sister-in-law Betty,  brother-in-law, Bruce Hudson, and his youngest son, Myron Plapp.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Friday, October 1, 2021 at Butala Funeral Home and Crematory, 1405 DeKalb Avenue, Sycamore, IL.

Celebration of Life service  will be held at Malta United Methodist Church at 11 AM on Saturday, October 2 with a 10 AM visitation prior to the service.

Burial will be at Malta Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the Plapp Agricultural Heritage Museum.
