Friends and family of the David and (late) Betty Ann Walker family share the passing on August 6, 2025, of David Martin Walker, Sr. (born July 31, 1944), known by many as "Grandpa Dave" or, by natives of Dolton, Illinois, as "Chief." In his 81 years, David served in Christian faith as a friend, mentor and coach to many.

Visitation shall be on Sunday, August 10, 2025, from 2:00-6:00 pm at Butala Funeral Home, 1405 DeKalb Ave, Sycamore, IL; a church service is scheduled for Monday, August 11th, with viewing from 10:00-11:00 am and service from 11:00-Noon at Sycamore Methodist Church, 160 Johnson Ave, Sycamore. David will then be laid to rest next to Betty Ann at Genoa Cemetery.

Sons David Jr., Mike (wife Barbie), Todd (wife Amy) and Dennis (wife Christina), appreciate the ongoing and gracious support and love shown to David Sr. and their family as dad went home to heaven to be with his wife Betty Ann, and his parents Ada and Herbert Sr.

David's siblings Diane (deceased), Herb and Joan share their appreciation of the support provided to David and his family as his health declined. Herb and his wife Jan shared stories about Dave as they visited him and family at the hospital before dad passed.

David and Betty Ann proudly raised their four boys who blessed the family with grandchildren Theresa, Sydney, Riley, Kristina, Logan, Cassidy, Kendall, Tyler, Lauren, Andy, Thomas, Veronica, and great grandchildren Dean, Marlene, and Grace.

David was born in Chicago, met the love of his life Betty Ann (nee Gerristen) in high school, and they married and soon moved to the suburb of Dolton, Illinois, where they spent most of their lives raising their sons, participating in scouting, coaching little leagues, and where they became part of the tight knit fabric of the Dolton community. Dave was a successful football coach for the Dolton Park Bears, where all four of his sons played Pop Warner football and where "Coach Dave" mentored many players.

On high school diplomas, David and Betty worked hard to ensure all four of their sons completed college. As a fun-filled family, their weekends were spent at the Izaak Walton lake in Dolton, and summer vacations were spent at various midwest campgrounds and cottages in Michigan. There the spirited boys enjoyed the splendor of swimming, fishing, catching frogs and turtles, riding dirt bikes, and enjoying campfires while Dave and Betty relaxed over their favorite Strohs and Miller Lites.

The Walker home in Dolton was a staple for the boys' friends who considered Dave and Betty an extension of their own families. All were welcome there for backyard basketball, evening fire pits, and live music in the basement. During their college years, the boys brought many fraternity friends to Dolton to benefit from the love and warmth Dave and Betty generously expended to all who entered.

David was a highly successful law enforcement official, with over 40 years' service as a patrolman, sergeant, and three-time Chief of Police in Dolton, and later in Hinckley and Malta. After Betty Ann passed in 2013, David spent his remaining years hosting family and friends at his cottage on Lake Christy in Michigan. Many fond memories were made as family and friends spent weekends and summer vacations on the water with grandpa Dave often serving as skipper on his pontoon boat.

After David settled in DeKalb, he enjoyed weekly breakfasts with other seniors, weekly church services at Sycamore Methodist Church, weekly lightening games at the Sycamore VFW, and doling out ice cream bars to the neighborhood kids. Dave and Betty generously gave to various churches and philanthropies were in need.

Among his many talents, Dave was gifted with small machine repair and tinkering, and made sure to teach these skills to his sons. One of his favorite weekend hobbies was mowing the grass at the Ikes. Even in the last week of his life, grandpa was focused on how others were doing, recalling dates of family members' birthdays and anniversaries, and always offering to help friends and family.

Wherever he lived and whoever he was around, David made others feel heard, supported, and loved.
