Clayton H. Edgcomb, 71

Sycamore – Clayton H. Edgcomb of Sycamore, IL passed away on April 21, 2023 in DeKalb, Illinois. Clayton was born October 6, 1951 in Mendota, Illinois to Raymond and Mable Edgcomb.

Clayton is survived by his wife, Laura; brother Anthony (Melissa) Edgcomb; two nephews; Scott and Stephen (Laurie) Edgcomb; two nieces; Michelle (Tom) Friday; and Kara (Eric) Roe; great nephew, Alexander Edgcomb, great niece Cameron and great nephew Tyler Roe; sister-in-laws, Carol (Charles) Foglesong and their children, Elizabeth and Thomas; Alice (Richard) Wagner and their children, Rachel and Austin; special friends of Clayton; Cindy and Mike Wagner and their daughter Rachel.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mable Edgcomb, in-laws Victor and Genevieve, in-law Stepmother Lois Duray. Two brother-in-laws; Raymond and Jon Duray.

After high school graduation Clayton enjoyed many hobbies including learning to be a pilot and parachuting five times. He was an avid Nascar fan. Number 3 Dale Earnhardt (The Intimidator) was his hero. It was because of his hero, that he drove at the Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Illinois - of course it was car number 3.

Clayton graduated from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. In his late twenties, he attended John Marshall Law School in Chicago, receiving a JD in Law.

At the age of 3, Clayton began riding in a semi truck belonging to his father and uncle's. Thus, after graduating with a degree in law (passing the bar exam on the first try), he decided to become a truck driver/dock man and of course joined the Teamsters in 1985. This is where he discovered his true passion. He was employed by Consolidated Freightways for 17 years. In 2002, he became a dock man for Yellow-Roadway and worked there until 2018. This is where Clayton used his law degree, giving "free" legal advice to many friends and co-workers at Yellow-Roadway. His wife often told friends her husband drove a forklift very intelligently!

Clayton met his wife Laura on a blind date on June 9 ^th , 1989. They were married February 29, 1992. She was the love of his life and they were married over 31 years. During their lifetime together, they enjoyed many adventures. Their love of travel took them to all 48 continental states and 10 foreign countries.

From a very young age, Clayton was an enthusiastic horseback rider. Laura shared his love of riding and they went on many horseback riding trips in 8 states and Canada. Between 1995 and 2010 with outfitters, they made 7 trips on horseback in the Rocky Mountains; for a total of 49 days and nights. These 7 trips included 5 base camps and 2 moving trips allowing them to camp, ride, and see the beauty of the Rocky Mountains including sleeping under glaciers!

His favorite pastime when he wasn't traveling was reading. His favorite authors were John Gresham and Stephen King. He enjoyed reading about the "Wild West" weather it was a book or his subscription to the Wild West magazine.

Clayton was one of a kind; he was a loving husband to his wife Laura and will be greatly missed by everyone. All we can say is - Happy Trails to you Clayton!

The visitation for Clayton will be at the DeKalb Christian Church, 1107 South First Street in DeKalb, Illinois on Sunday May 21, 2023 from 2:00-5:00 P.M.

A Celebration of Life for Clayton will be held on Monday, May 22, 2023 at the DeKalb Christian Church beginning at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Tom J. Hughes officiating.
