Obituary

Betty A. Shott, 92, of Roscoe, IL, formerly of Genoa died February 23, 2024 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.


She was born October 24, 1931 in Sycamore to Samuel and Olin (VanMeter) Swedberg.  Betty was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church and married Richard A. Shott on August 1, 1953 in Sycamore.


Betty was proud of her Swedish heritage and cherished memories of spending time as a child on her grandparents farm in Mayfield Township with her many Swedberg cousins and her dear Grandparents.  Her love of the outdoors was fostered in spending every summer of her high school and college as a girls camp counselor at Camp Nicolet in northern Wisconsin.


She attended the University of Illinois and graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in Physical Education.

She taught Junior and Senior high school Physical Education and coached many girls sports at Hampshire High School, retiring after 25 years.


Betty was an avid golfer and won many golfing awards.  She and her husband, Richard played many courses together as they traveled throughout their retirement years.  Her last round of golf was played at the age of 90.


Survivors include her 4 sons, Jay (Gloria), Jeffrey (Carol), John (Diana) and Daniel (Kara); his daughter-in-law, Crystal; 11 grandchildren, Joseph Shott, Jessica Megginson, Jarod Shott, Rachel Shott, Jason Shott, Jackie Margiotta, Jeni Maijala, Samantha Crow, Taylor, Alexandra and Joelle Shott; and 14 great grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Roger Swedberg, her husband, Richard in 2019, and one son, William.



A memorial visitation will be on Friday, March 1, 2024 from 4:00 pm- 7:00 pm at the Slater-Butala Funeral Home in Genoa.  A memorial service will be on Saturday, March 2nd at 10:00 am at the funeral home with Rev. Janet Hunt officiating.



In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Camp Nicolet Scholarship Fund in care of the Slater-Butala Funeral Home, 132 W. Main, Genoa, IL. 60135 or OSF Hospice, 5501 E. State St., Rockford. IL 61108.
