Betty J. Burke
August 14, 1928 – March 31, 2026

Betty J. Burke, 97, of Genoa, Illinois, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026.Born on August 14, 1928, in Belvidere, Illinois, Betty was the beloved daughter of the late Stanley and Margaret Carpenter. She carried with her throughout life a deep sense of dedication, hard work, and love for family, faith, and community.

Betty was united in marriage to her loving husband, Richard L. Burke, with whom she shared 53 wonderful years. Together, they built a life centered on devotion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to their family.

A woman of many talents and a strong work ethic, Betty served her community in numerous roles over the years. She worked as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Belvidere, Illinois, and later operated a beauty shop out of her home, where she formed many lasting friendships. She also drove a bus for Riley Grade School, delivered mail for the U.S. Postal Service, and generously gave her time as a girls' softball coach in Riley Township. In every role, she was known for her kindness, reliability, and genuine care for others.

Betty found great joy in both her work and her hobbies. She loved playing cards, spending time camping with family, and was an active member of a knitting, crocheting, and sewing group, where she shared her creativity and friendship with others. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she was a devoted member of St. Catherine's of Genoa Catholic Church for many years, remaining actively involved in her parish community.

A devoted mother, Betty was a proud parent of seven children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard (Dick) Burke; two daughters, Nancy Wright (David) and Christine Moon (Jim) and her granddaughter, Tia Demand.  She is lovingly remembered by her surviving children: Connie Becker (Bob), Pat Dahl (Neal), Bill Burke (Joy), Lorrie Willard (Dave), and Sharon Burke (Tom).

Betty is also survived by her sister, Helen Esmond, and her brother, Bob Carpenter (Bev), as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty's greatest joy was her family. She will be remembered for her strength, her compassion, her faith, and the many lives she touched through both her work and her generous spirit. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and all who knew and loved her.

She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

Her memorial visitation will be on Wednesday, April 8th from 10:00-11:00 AM at St. Catherine of Genoa Church, 340 S. Stott St., Genoa, IL.  A funeral mass will begin at 11:00 AM.

Burial will be at the St. Catherine Cemetery.  A luncheon will follow the burial at the Church Hall.
