August Wayne "Sam" Oltman, 91, of Sycamore died October 15, 2023 at NW Medicine- Kishwaukee Hospital.
He was born on July 11, 1932 in Adams, NE to William and Ruth (Harper) Oltman. He married Bessie Keller on July 8, 1955 at Mayfield Congregational Church, Sycamore IL where he was a member for over 50 years.
Sam was a graduate of the Sycamore High School- Class of 1951 in which year he suffered a farming accident catching his right hand in a corn picker and maiming it for life. This accident did not hinder him from becoming a professional tool and die maker and wood carver.
Sam worked as a Tool and Die Maker for Wurlitzer, DeKalb IL for 7 years, Jensen and Sons for 26 years and Driv-Lok, Sycamore IL for 7 years. He owned and worked his own work shop where he did various motorcycle work for Bob-Jo Cycle and surrounding cycle shops. He also loved working on clocks, watches and handiwork for a number of years.
Sam enjoyed wood carving and was a handyman. Throughout his life he owned several motorcycles: Harley Davidson, BMW his favorite and his pride and joy the Honda RUNE. He was an avid rider; also enjoyed fishing and shooting.
He was a member of the Sycamore and St. Charles Sportsmen's Club, DeKalb County Farm Bureau – was on the trap shooting team for several years and won state shooting trophies. Competitor in black powder and trap shooting.
Survivors include: His wife Bessie with whom he was married 68 years and daughter Diane (Joe) Lathrop of Sycamore, granddaughter Danelle (Kyle) Wells-Miller of Watertown WI and grandson Derrick Wells of Sycamore.
He was preceded in death by his parents William and Ruth Oltman, brother John Oltman and nephew Luke Oltman.

His visitation will be on Friday, October 20th from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM at the Butala Funeral Home in Sycamore. A private service will begin at 2:15 PM at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore.A memorial for Sam Oltman has been established for the family to determine a charity at a later date in care of the Butala Funeral Home, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL. 60178.
